For a while, I’ve been fascinated with the film noir look. The dramatic shadows combine with stern looks for out of the ordinary portrait. I figured out the basics of how to light a model for that film noir look, but I didn’t have the people. So I talked to some friends and stirred up some interest. I asked people to bring a costume of their design that would fit the feel. I organized a Facebook event and a surprising amount of people came. People came with all sorts of props and different costumes. After we got everyone together, we set up in front of a black background and just swapped people in and out. The feeling of each shot was definitely a collaboration of the subject’s costume, personality and my shooting.
